Scientific data validates retinoids (Vitamin A) as the single most proven ingredient for improving everything from Acne, winkles, pigmentation and collagen synthesis since Albert Kligman, M.D., ph.D., patented the retinoic acid drug Retin-A in 1973.
Once the topical retinoid is applied to the skin, enzymes convert the retinoid into retinoic acid, which binds to DNA via receptors and activate the skin’s genes to promote healthier cell growth.
There is a full spectrum of retinoids available, the weaker variety are stable and easier to use however less effective on the skin. The more potent the forms offer many more benefits to the skin; however, they are unstable, light sensitive and irritate the skin with daily use.
At Essential Well-being we offer 2 strengths of Retinal which have highly concentrated formulas of encapsulated retinol which dramatically reduce the appearance of visible fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone. Our Retinol fights free radical damage with potent antioxidant support which revitalises the skin and reduces skin ageing.
When selecting a retinol product, I would recommend to take advice from a skin therapist who will advise you on the correct strength to use and how to apply. Here are some useful tips to follow when using a high strength Retinol.

- Ensure that your retinol has been encapsulated in a specially controlled environment to overcome the stability and sensitivity issues. The encapsulation slowly feeds the skin with the highly active ingredient minimising skin surface irritation.
- Introduce your retinoid gradually to build up your skins tolerance, applying too much retinoid too quickly risk a dermatitis response that will leave your skin pink and irritated. Dilute your product to begin with until your skin’s tolerance builds.
- Only apply at night time as retinoids degrade in the presence of UV.
- When you first start using a retinol, your skin may experience tightness, become drier and flakier, this is due to the increased exfoliation and cell renewal, use a heavier weight moisturiser more frequently to prevent dehydration from water loss.
- Avoid the eye area, retinoid formulas are too strong for the delicate eye tissue unless you have a specially formulated eye product which will have a reduced percentage of retinol.
Finally, for extra safety use an SPF 50 daily to prevent further sensitivity, photo ageing and hyperpigmentation issues. Taking sensible precautions will ensure you get the maximum results out of your product while maintaining your skin health.
