Causes of dry skin;

Unlike dehydrated skin, which needs water, dry skin needs lipids. The skin’s lipid barrier is critical for keeping dryness out and locking moisture in. When the lipid barrier is compromised, the skin becomes more vulnerable to moisture loss and extrinsic factors such as weather changes or environmental stress. This leads to signs of dryness such as flaking, dullness, roughness,
tightness, itching, irritation, and cracking. To restore and prevent dry skin from becoming worse, lipids need to be replenished, nourished, and protected. A strong lipid barrier helps keep skin hydrated and healthy-looking by holding water in and keeping environmental pollutants and microbes out. With environmental factors, the integrity of the stratum corneum can be altered and cause an increase in transepidermal water loss (TEWL). The alterations of stratum corneum proteins and lipids lead to compromised dry skin. When the stratum corneum becomes overstressed and has continued water loss – the skin becomes more dry, dull, and can lose elasticity.

How to treat dry skin;

A great way to overcome dry skin concerns is to use products rich in ingredients that will nourish, condition, and moisturize the skin as well as help restore and strengthen the lipid barrier. Given that the skin typically is an efficient barrier to the penetration of external products, formulas composed of oil-soluble ingredients are effective options for better product penetration into the stratum corneum. Plant butters, waxes and oils are also great options to deliver ultra-nourishing benefits as they are loaded with lipids that can replenish dry skin. However, many products that are rich in lipids can be solid at room temperature. Low-viscosity ingredients (those with a thinner consistency) can help aid in the diffusion of actives in the formula and their delivery to the skin. Products with high viscosity, like butters and waxes, need to melt (moving from high to low viscosity) in order to provide a better absorption of their actives into the skin’s surface layers. These ingredients will melt at a specific temperature according to their melting point.
