During lock down, I spent my time decorating at Essential Well-being, recapping on my product knowledge and skin histology with Dermalogica and learning new things for reopening.
The whole team, took extra qualifications about Health and Safety, sanitisation and disinfection and topped up their Dermalogica Expert status.
I have spent time with Ghislaine our Medical Herbalist and Supplement Consultant learning about the supplements and why it is important for us to take them.
Eating a healthy balanced diet is recommended for all of us, however many of the foods we eat may lose their nutrients as they go through processing e.g.
- Whole wheat loses vitamins, minerals and fibre when it is milled into flour
- Rice loses most of its vitamins and minerals when it is processed from brown to white
- In addition to processing the plants’ nutrient quality may be lessened as they are often grown in nutrient-depleted soil
Our life style and health also affects our food absorption and can lead to nutrient deficiencies. For example:
- Alcohol consumption depletes vitamins B, C, and minerals
- Allergies and infections deplete vitamin C and zinc and other nutrients
- Air pollution and smoking depletes antioxidants and STRESS depletes vitamins B and C
In many ways supplements to humans are like fertiliser to plants, plants can survive on sunlight and water, add a nutrient-rich fertiliser and the plant will thrive. This same principle is applied to humans, a healthy balanced diet supplies our bodies with sufficient nutrients to carry out our daily routines, however supplements such as vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids can benefit our bodies cellular protection, repair and regeneration. Diet is particularly important as we age, our dietary needs change and our ability to absorb and utilise many nutrients reduces.
During my Fifties, I became aware that I was feeling more tired, my joints stiffened, my eyes dried and sensitised, my digestive system troubled me and I started to get inflammation and restless legs. These symptoms lead me to research supplements and team up with our Medical Herbalist and Supplement consultant Ghislaine at Essential well-being.
Walking into a supplement shop can be overwhelming and somewhat daunting, there are so many pills and capsules available, it is confusing, do you need to take them all or just a couple of them? Ghislaine and I have selected a handful of must-have supplements to support your health as you age. We recommend and stock all in our well-being shop 9 London Road Spalding.
We now stock a range of supplements at Essential Well-being, 9 London Road, Spalding and Ghislaine is available by appointment for consultations either in the clinic or on Zoom.
