New Age Bright Active Clearing Targeting
Daily pressures from the modern pace of daily life causes conflict between our minds and our bodies. Our minds want to go faster, multitask and achieve more, but our Stone Age body biochemistry cannot keep up, this discrepancy results with chronic stress.
Women are particularly at risk, balancing the pressures of work with motherhood and maintaining a functioning household. Women are twice as likely to suffer from severe stress and anxiety than men.
Chronic stress leads to adrenal fatigue and hormonal imbalances, and when combined with environmental pollutants and poor lifestyle, it prematurely ages our bodies both internally and externally.
As a professional Skin Therapist at Essential Well-being, I would like to inform you about the effects of stress on our skin:
The skin is the largest organ of the body and its reaction to stress and adrenal fatigue is inflammation, Acne, skin sensitivity and dehydration.
Chronic stress increases levels of stress related hormones such as cortisol and adrenal androgens which increase the production of sebum (oil) on the skin. This excess oil mixes with dead skin cells and clogs the follicles. The pressure from within the follicle and stimulates the P. Acne bacteria to bread causing breakouts of spots.
Cortisol also lowers the natural production of Hyaluronic Acid which keeps our skin protected and hydrated. The skins surface becomes dehydrated and the protective barrier fails causing irritation, sensitivity and redness.
Stress damages collagen causing premature ageing, slower healing, rough and uneven skin texture and tone.
Inflammatory breakouts damage both the surface and underlaying tissues, creating discolouration and dark marks that can remain for weeks after the blemish has healed. This discolouration is caused by the skin’s melanocytes being stimulated by the inflammation and is known as post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
All of the above makes adult acne more complex to treat than teenage acne and there are many factors to consider when treating it:
- Reducing excess sebum production
- Stimulating cell renewal to promote healing and reduce skin ageing
- Controlling the production of the P.acne bacteria
- Reducing inflammation around the breakouts
Dermalogica have launched a new range of products targeting all of products called Active Clearing for adult acne.

In addition to stress there are many other lifestyle habits which can worsen the condition of your skin such as sun exposure, environmental pollutants, smoking, pore blocking products, astringent products, picking o squeezing allowing your skin to dehydrate or dry out.
Studies have also shown that food may also influence sebum production and skin oiliness and inflammation. A diet of vegetables, fruit, lean protein and healthy fats is recommended and avoiding
