But why do we have dark spots?
Hyperpigmentation
Dark spots can take on many names; sun spots, age spots, melasma, whatever you may call it, these terms all fall under what is known as hyperpigmentation.
This common condition is where patches of skin become darker than the surrounding area, this is caused by an excess production of melanin deposits and can be triggered by many factors like UV rays, pollution, hormones, injuries etc.
Malanogene
Malanogenesis is a complex process which produces the melanin pigment. This pigment determines the colour of our skin and eyes.
Melanocytes
These cells produce melanin when exposed to UV radiation to prevent you from sun damage, commonly known as a sun tan.
Langerhans cells
Langerhans are sister cells to Melanocytes and are triggered when an injury occurs, their duel action means that hyperpigmentation can form when you suffer a skin injury.
Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation
This occurs as the skin injury heals and we commonly see post inflammatory pigmentation after an inflamed breakout
Melasma
hormones can cause dark areas on the skin, especially during pregnancy and while using certain medications such as the contraceptive pill,
Environment
Sun is a well-known cause of pigmentation, but did you know that pollution can also increase pigmentation.
What do we recommend?
Always use a an SPF see our recommendations here, even if it is raining, harmful UVA penetrates our skin and can trigger not just hyperpigmentation but DNA damage too.
For the treatment of dark spots, at Essential Well-being, we recommend a course of Dermalogica Pro Power Peel, follow the link for more detail.
At home we recommend exfoliation see our recommendations to increase cell renewal and the use of Powerbright Dark Spot Serum to target the dark spots.
